Background

Hiccup is a child of Chapel Hill, a village of rather pious peasants. He does not have any friends. For as long as he can remember, others tend to avoid him. Used to being alone, he has taken a habit up avoiding other too. On the other hand, he is very curious, and now there are travellers in the village, and they look really strange. Scaring really, what is it about them?

The only person who has accepted Hiccup is Adoarna, the Wise Woman. Hiccup loves the stories from when she was a child, and about the fair folk. Adoarna has mentioned, once or twice, that Hiccup is really one of them. Maybe that is why the other children shun him? These stories have also brought him a great doubt. Is there really salvation in the Church? Aren’t the Heroes of Ireland more powerful?

The faeries are dangerous though. They steal little children, play tricks, and rob you if you are caught unaware. You should not go into the forest at all. If you do anyway, you have to carry a cross, or better, two crosses, one in each hand. If you see a faerie, wave the crosses and bid them to leave in the name of Christ.

The crosses do not help against Fionn Mac Cumhaill though. He doesn’t care. Fionn is not his real name. Some believe that if you knew his true name, you could force him away with a cross too.
