Goal My main aim will be to present past break-throughs, so as to imply that the order has been refining magic, and the current guidelines are not some unchanging perfection. The Folios will be also a source of "standard spells", thus explaing why the core book has that particular set of spells to start with, including "legacy spells"

---|---|---|---|
Tractatus | Magic Theory tractatus | Q4 | Explains how to make Arcane connections permanent |
LabText | The Crystal Dart | ReTe 10 | Side effect:The dart sparkles and sings as it flies |
Lab Text | Pilum of Fire | CrIg 20 | Side effect:The casters hands become slightly warm |
Lab Text | The Great Rot | PeHe 25 | Side Effect: Plant products handled by the caster turn brown until next sunrise/sunset. |
Tractatus | Magic Lore | Q7 | On the Nature of Bees |
Tractatus | Perdo | Q9 | On the Natural decay of animal Carcasses |
Tractatus | Animal | Q8 | With notes on the variability of litter sizes in pigs |
Point value 39
An Early Colens, the Major breakthrough that allowed Arcane Connections to be permanent, was rightfully deserving of a place, however the Magus who uncovered it preferred to remain anonymous. Naturally speculation at the time wondered if they had stolen someone else’s work. Whispers were also made that the Primus of House Guernicus had insisted on its inclusion, otherwise the discoverer would have had too much power to disrupt the Order. House Guernicus denied all such allegations.

Tractatus | Magic Theory | Q10 | Explains how to make Longevity Rituals that work more effectively for creatures aligned with the Magic Realm |
Tractatus | Creo | Q10 | With notes on specific applications to Longevity rituals |
Lab text | Stance of the Patient Tree | MuCo(He) 35 | Originally Potent Magic spell, experimentation means that there is no minimum magic theory needed for prop. |
Lab Text | Shiver of the Lycanthrope | InAn 10 | Side effect, caster’s hands do not tremble touching, the sensation is purely mental. |
Lab Text | Seal the Earth | CrTe 15 | Side Effect, small stones created with the dirt in this spell. They are always perfectly octahedral. |
Lab Text | Phanstasm of the talking head | CrIm 10 | Side effect, the face always looks like the caster. |
A very noteworthy Folio, published relatively (choose a date plausible for your saga) recently. Before this publication, longevity rituals had the same potency for both mundanes and Magi, i.e. Lab Total/10. Some say that the researcher, Agnes of Bonisagus was sponsored in her researches by House Tremere, and that they provided the … subjects … for her experimentation. No link has been proven.
Due to the popularity of this folio, the associated spells, are well disseminated despite their relative uselessness

Lab Text | Creeping Chasm | ReTe35 | Introduces target:Part |
Lab text | The Earth Split Asunder | ReTe30 | see above |
Lab text | Crest of the Earth Wave | ReTe20 | See above |
Tractatus | Magic Theory Tractatus | Q6 | Explains Target part |
Tractatus | On the division of forms | Q10 | Explores implications of target part. Can be read for twice, once as a philosophy tractatus, once as an Artes Liberales tractatus |
Point Value 33
The discovery of target: Part was a revolution in Hermetic magic, as it does not fit well with the concept of platonic ideals and forms. Consequently three of the spells invented during the research were included, to show that it really was a new target, and not just a quirk of one spell. In addition the rest of the Commentary was devoted to this new discovery. The successful Maga (Thalia) was briefly Prima, but soon succumbed to warping. Her name is honoured to this day
The spells and tractatus could be used as sources of insight for the Philosphoical breakthroughs detailed in Art and Academe, page 11

|———————————————-|———–!———————————————————————-| | Animal Tractatus | Q7 | brings `create a mammal’ down to base 15 from Base 20 | | Aquam Tractatus | Q7 | introduces the ‘control water in an extremely gentle way’ guideline | | Spell Mastery Tractatus: Aegis of the Hearth | Q5 | Teaches Safe Casting Mastery | | Spell Mastery tractatus:Cheating the Reaper | Q5 | Teaches Safe Casting Mastery | | Lab Text: Lungs of the Fish | MuAq20 | Non-Standard Spell | | Lab Text: True sight of Air | InAu15 | Non-Standard Spell | | Lab Text: Quiet the raging winds | PeAu20 | Brings in the `winds do not return for at least an hour’ statement. |
Point value 35
The Spell Mastery Tractaus were included at the insistance of the Colens leader, Agnes ex Bonisagus who had heard to many case of botches for these important spells. The Mastery removes all botch dice for rituals under unstressed circumstances.

Lab Text: Veil of Invisibility | PeIm 20 | Side Effect: When Dispelled, it lasts for an additional round. |
Point value 34
This is the canonical example, but as the book said that they try to include quirky things, I added beneficial side effects to the spells quoted.

Ignem Tractatus | Q9 | On the Fire spirits of Mount Etna |
Magic Lore Tractatus | Q8 | On the behaviour of Water spirits |
Point value 35
This Colens, Hosted at Aedes Mercurii, was dominated by a Maga Bonisagus, Phillipa who was originally taken from a Flambeau Parens, and the selection reflects her passions.
The two Art Tractautus, also give 1XP in the relevant Area Lores.

Lab text: Eyes of the Cat | Mu Co 5 | The caster can choose the eye colour at the time of casting but not thereafter. |
The potent spells were submitted by a Magus with a Potency in Destruction. Possibly as a way of intimidating rivals. Note that casters cannot use potent spells unless their Magic Theory at least equals the potency.

Lab Text: The gift of Vigour | ReCo 20 | Establishes the only Hermetic Spell to positively affect Fatigue |
Magic Theory Tractatus | Quality 9 | Explains how to accelerate the decay of Arcane connections, Establishes the Base 5: decay by one step guidline |
Corpus Tractatus | Quality 11 | An examination in relation to the Four humours |
Lab text: Pilum of Fire | CrIg 20 | Side effect Caster’s hands smell of Sulphur |
Ignem Tractatus | Quality 7 | Notes on the effects of fire on the four Humours |
Research is guided by fashion as much as policy. Sometimes there is great chatter about a single topic. The order was for a few years enthused about the possibilty of restoring fatigue, possibly by considering how to bolster the `fire' in one's blood. The Gift of Vigour was the only solid fruit of these researches.
Day 10 (sorry it is late, work intervened)
Document | Stats | Notes |
---|---|---|
Lab text: Cloak of Black Feathers | MuCo(an) 30 | Side effect (see below) |
Lab Text: The Many Hued Conflagration | MuIg 5 | No imaginem requisite, Introduces base three guideline of making fire have different colours. |
Lab Text: Calling the Council of the Trees | Re(In)He 45 | See below |
Magic Theory Tractatus | Quality 14 | Included for the admirable clarity of the work |
Aquam tractatus | Quality 5 | notable water spirits of the Loire |
The cloak of black feather spell originated from a potent spell, with the cloak providing the (necessary) prop. After experimentation a version was discovered , now standard, that still required the prop, but did not need the high magic theory that acts as the barrier to learning the potent spells of others.
The inclusion of Calling the Council of the trees, however was purely political. It is a powerful spell invented by a member of the collens, and he wanted it published to strengthen his case for his ascension to the primacy of House Bonisagus. It did not succeed.

Lab text: Eyes of the Eagle | InIm 25 | Failed, but interesting attempt to break the limit of the lunar sphere |
Vim Tractatus | Quality 12 | Speculations on the Lunar sphere |
Animal Tractatus | Quality 13 | Raptors of the Alpine regions |
Produced about fifty to seventy years after the end of the schism war, the breakthrough on teleportation guidelines was encouraged by the destruction of the Redcap’s permanent portal network. Previously long-distance travel was more of a hub and spoke model, and the Covenants that hosted the portals wielded considerable soft power. With the lack of long distance communication public spirited bonisagi put time into bring down the base. The political implications of this reduction in barriers to travel are still being played out.
Day 14
Document | Stats | Notes |
---|---|---|
Lab text: Summoning the Distant Image | CrIm 30 | Potent Spell, Potency 8, Rock-crystal sphere on a hazel wand |
Lab text: Panic of the Trembling heart | CrMe 15 | Side effect: The fear is always about fear itself. |
Imaginem Tractatus | Quality 13 | On creating Sounds at distance. |
Finesse Tractatus | Quality 13 | On controlling images |
Again after the end of the Schism war, keeping in touch was a problem. Other Magi sought to allow communication rather than travel to fix the problem. The potent version of Summoning the distant image would allow for lab rats to cast an otherwise fatiguing spell. It has not yet caught on as an order wide method due to penetration-of-aegis issues and scrying problems.
Day 15.
I tried to give a bit of back story to the current residents of Durenmar. Murion must have done something in her earlier career to warrant becoming Prima over and above her political skills.
Document | Stats | Notes |
---|---|---|
Lab Text: Illusion of the Misplaced Castle | ReIm 50 | Side Effect: The Place that the image is torn from can be chosen to look like the Caster’s desire. A finesse roll (SG choice) is required to get the details right. By Murion |
LabText: Discern own Illusions | InIm 50 | Lowers base guidelines on discerning your own illusions to current value from base 2 to base 1. By Occultes |
Rego Tractatus | Quality 10 | On the possibility of substituting Finesse for Levels |
Intellego Tractatus | Quality 7 | On Mirrors. |
Penetration Tractatus | Quality 6 | On piercing illusions |
Murion (the Current Prima of House Bonisagus) is known as an expert in Rego and Imaginem. She may be master of other Arts , but she has kept these to herself. The reason that she is known a as master of these is due to her early researches, published in various Folios. She was always concerned with tidying up Bonisagus’s great work rather than discovering new things.
In contrast Occultes of Bonisagus, was always interesting in the more esoteric applications and expanding the range of the Bonisagus’s great work. This was not his most notable work, but a fine contribution nonetheless. It is suspected that this work was part of his work to integrate Second Sight into Hermetic Theory. This possible negationof Murion’s speciality might explain why he has been sidelined. Or it may not. Neither has commented publically on this.
October 10, 2019, 3:06am #23
If I may be so bold, consider a tractatus on Magic Theory containing a new Shape or Material bonus, derived from the author's work in Vulgar Alchemy.
Don't worry I have those planned as well. I am playing in a campaign with a maga who has a re-jigged (better) Vulgar Alchemy, and I will slip some of her ideas in.
Day 16: Work intervened again...

Artes Liberales tractatus | Quality 14 | On the Golden ratio |
Intellego tractatus | Quality 11 | On discerning individuals in various settings. |
The counting guidelines were established by a Magus who was resident in the Transylvanian tribunal. Why he needed to obsessively count things was never discovered.

Philosophy Tractatus | Quality 5 | What is reality? |
Lab text :Wizard’s Eclipse | PeIg 35 | Early (failed) attempt to affect the Lunar sphere. |
Creo Tractatus | Quality 13 | Excellent discussion of Vis Distillation |
A very early Folio, containing the very important breakthrough of setting the number of pawns of Vis useable in a season to double the Magus’s Magic Theory. Previously this had been the Magus’s Magic Theory multiplied by one and a half.
The Philosophy tractatus comment on the beauty of the numerical relation between Bonisagus’s theory and the natural world
This folio could provide insight for those wishing to research further improvement to the multiplier.

Lab text: The Walking Corpse | ReCo 35 | Base used to be 15, now the published level. |
Lab text : Twist of the tongue | PeCo 30 | Spiral effect without Rego Requisite |
Another Early Folio, this one establishes the ability to distil Vis from Aurae. No longer do magi have to hunt it down!
Day 20
Document | Stats | Notes |

Magic Theory Tractatus | Quality 8 | Introduces the Shape bonus of "Leaf" giving +4 herbam |
Lab Text | CrHe 35 Vines as Mayflies | Brings a standard size group of plants to Maturity in a day. Potent Spell: Leaf +4 |
Lab text | InHe 25 How does my Garden Grow | As the spell Converse with Plant and Tree, except experimentation has added the side effect that bystanders *can* understand. Potent Spell: Leaf +4 |
Muto Tractatus | Quality 8 | On the possibility of transmuting Vis |
Auram Tractatus | Quality 7 | The winds of change |
The Herbam Spells and the Magic theory tractatus were submitted by Vesta of Bonisagus, a Maga with a Potency in Gardens. The Art tractatus were found in the effects of a Magus Bonisagus who went into twilight whilst investigating the possibility of changing the Art that Vis is aligned to. There is no evidence that they succeded. Possibly there might be interesting artifacts in such a Magus's laboratory?
Day 21
Document | Stats | Notes |

Lab text: Infernal Smoke of Death | MuAu 40 | Side effect: Smoke remains deadly after concentration stops.(as published spell) |
Lab text: Broom of the Winds | CrAu 15 | Side effect: Wind sings almost understandable words. |
Merinita and Guernicus provided the examples on how to speak to plant animal and stone. Obsessive Bonisagi eventually worked out how to extend these guidelines to other forms.

This was part of the research of Sheeta, a Maga in the Greater Alps tribunal.
She intimates in the tractatus, that further research is ongoing into castles in the sky, but this is not yet complete. Maybe her hermetic descendants might have carried on her work?
New item:
A Peaceful Castle: CrMe 34
Base 4, (create an emotion), +1 touch, +1structure, +2 sun, +2 size,
+4 (make permanent)
This Brick when built into a structure of up to size +2 makes everyone
feel at peace and contemplative. It was developed as part of the effort
to show that Brick, provides a +5 form bonus to affect
structures it is part of.
The other spells were part fo the research, but due to experimentation do not have target: room
Day 23
This presents a Minor breakthrough: One can now fix more than one arcane connection in a season. Further research might improve the number.
Also presented are two Spells that were developed by a Magus with Potent magic (self-transformation) but experimentation means that there is no minimum magic theory for the prop, it provides no bonus, but is necessary for the spell to work. They are included as curiosities.

Day 24
This one is for radically changing the setting.… In order to redesign Notatus's great creation Vesta of Bonisagus had to research a great deal of hermetic lore and seek outside influences. She finally succeeded in modifying the Aegis so that as well as providing magical protection it also removes the negative influence of the gift within its confines. What this will mean for the social impact of the order who can tell...

New guideline:
Rego Vim:
When casting the Aegis of the Hearth, a Magus may forgo 3 levels of
Parma Magica for the duration of the spell to imbue the Aegis with the
full power of Parma: Every creature within the Aegis is immune to
the negative social effects of the gift. This effect needs to penetrate
as normal for the aegis
Nice breakthrough. Dangerous for the casting magus, but great for the Order as a collective.

Gloria was briefly Prima of House Bonisagus, before succumbing to final twilight.

Artes Liberales Tractatus | Quality 10 | On the possibility of a fourth dimension |
Basiraa was taken as an apprentice from Sicily and had a minor
magical focus in seeing beyond the mundane. She managed to reduce the
base to detect regio boundaries from 5 to 3. She has been cruelly
forgotten by most hermetic histories.
Her Parens Hilda also contributed to this folio and took most of the
credit. She claimed that, after a breakthrough in Artes Liberales that
she made through considering regio levels, she postulated the existence
of the tesseract.
The new form and material bonuses are
Rod of Ascelepius :Healing Humans +6/Diagnosis +6
Wine :Mentem +4.
Tesseract :Vim +4/affecting Regios +5.

A Modest Proposal on the Structure of Laboratory Texts: Once read, it allows the creation of clearer lab texts which offer a +6 bonus to the lab total of the reader (i.e. it has integrated Apt Lab Student).
Silent Study of the Mortal mind: No words or gestures needed.
Measure Pilum of Fire: As normal spell but caster rolls two fewer botch dice (min one)
Magical Plants and the Cultivation thereof: New Guideline of Create magical plant, Base 50, similar to that of creating a magical Animal.
Creation of the Spun-Glass Rose: creates a single rose-bush with glass flowers. It can propagate.
Insights from the Familiar, and their Application to the Talisman. Once learned, personal powers imbued into the talisman don't warp the user (just like powers in the familiar bond).
Stories from the Hearth. A series of insights from the hedge witches of Ireland, this means that the supernatural abilities of apprentices can be preserved if the Intellego Vim lab total equals the target, rather than doubling it.
While I like it, it does include three Hermetic Breakthroughs. Additionally all three have the potential of greatly increasing the power level of Magi. The ability to learn higher level spells/produce more powerful items easier, increased high powered Constent effects on the individual Magus, and far easier access to powerful apprentices will all change the Order.
That Folio would be hotly contested for who gets it next and/or gets a copy of it.
