To my sodales everywhere, greetings. It has always been my firm belief that magi of our Order of Hermes should seek to serve the mundane population rather than dominate it. We of the Rusticani already, as a group, hold this belief but I see few others doing so. Our Gift is a blessing from God and is a rare thing indeed. Surely the Lord gave us our ability to learn power to support his people on Earth. We Rusticani work within mundane communities to make our powers available to the betterment of those same communities and as such respect the very reason the Gift was given us. However, unless our Gift is a gentle one we, like most of our sodales, cause distrust and fear among those we dwell. This leads to the covenant system, where most magi shut themselves off from the world and interact only with those few who can eventually accept their Gift without fear. My intention is to create a new grouping I call the Servants of the People with the intent that we as an Order may better interact within the world’s societies. I have spent many decades creating the basics of this new mystery and call on any who would seek the same goals to come meet me at my tower at the junction of the Shannon and Suck rivers, south of the monastery of Clonmacnoise. You must arrive at the Spring Equinox to ensure easy entry to the regio in which I reside. Come join me on this new venture to integrate our fine Order to the service of the societies we have for so long shunned.
Jerome the Rusticani Ex Miscellanea Winter 1198
The Excursion
Cieran’s investigations in the library reveal that the location where Suck and Shannon meet is well know for its beauty. It is 40 miles from the covenant, and there is supposed to be a magic aura or region of level 3. Cieran, Una, and Seafraid travel to check out Jerome’s Tower.
The Magi and three shield grogs move out to Killaloe, the capital of The Kingdom of Thomond and the seat of the Ui Briain clan and learn that the walls had recently been damaged by the Ui Conchobhair of Southern Connacht. They heard rumours and seen signs of mercenary gathering that King Donnchadh intended a counterstrike.
The group moved to the east of Lough Derg and picked up information at the inn half way up along the lough length that the monster did not come ashore or attack those on the banks. However, the road is haunted by bandits, and many peasants who cannot afford the steep prices at the inn camp just outside the palisade.
The group reached the junction of the Shannon and Suck rivers, where each was crossed by a separate bridge, within sight of the large monastery community of Clonmacnoise. They rescued a well dressed young boy from six wretched humanoid creatures and bested them before a contingent of armoured horseman with a priest, father Utred, came down from the monastery. The group were led by the clan chief The O’Sullivan who was grateful that the group had saved his son Maine. The magi accepted an invitation to stay with the clan chief and enjoyed a fine meal. Una was able to secure the services of a trained kennel man just out of his apprenticeship. She agreed to consult her peers and to make a decision before the end of Summer.
The next morning the group found the Jerome’s tower using second sight and entered the regio, though only the magi could enter. They explored the tower, avoiding the sanctum level but found no one at home.
Not finding Jerome at home, they decided to check out the tombs from where the ghouls had appeared. The find a barrow which had been broken open. It was huge, with a long tunnel leading into an infernal regio. They found a total of ten grave chambers. One was broken open, containing the body of Jerome. The other nine contained nine ghouls each, apparently trapped within a ward. The magi decided to bring Jerome’s body out, and leave the ghouls in peace within their wards. Knowing Jerome to be dead, it was time to enter his sanctum.
The magi found several interesting books and scrolls in the tower, including several books on the arts, several tomes in Greek by Aristotle, a primer in the lore of Servants of the Common People, and scrolls with initiation scripts. Jerome’s notes also confirm that he had embarked on a mission to rid the neighbourhood of the evil creatures. He left all his possessions to those who would continue his work as Servants of the Common People.
Jerome was taken to Qui Sonant for burial, borrowing a cart and an escort from Lord O’Sullivan.
Cieran never got the time to talk to the Abbot, Patrick.
