For two weeks around the equinox, the covenfolk struggle with sleepness nights. The magi finally find that this is caused by a residual from infernal activities, and they link it to the bad omen about the fiery king coming to take Maine and his lady. Visiting Clon MacNoise confirms that they too struggle with the same sleeplessness. Only Abbot Paedric, father Uthred, and three of the monks seem to be unaffected.

Lord Maine is overseeing the construction of a new church over the infernal site, previously encountered. A new town, to be called Elk’s Friend, is growing up around the construction site. It is due to be completed by the Autumn 1234 and Maine plans to get married there on the equinox.

Richard still struggles with sleeplessness when the rest of the covenant recovers. The magi investigate but find no traces of magic.

Viðkunn and Ingabold, two of the Gifted Norsemen, arrive to trade, with an entourage of four warriors. Several years have passed since their last visit, and the magi learn that Astrið, another Gifted one, has passed away a few Winters ago.
